Objects & Functions of World Bowls

The Sport of Bowls is played across the world and our sport must have an International Federation to govern the sport. There are 55 Member National Authorities in 51 Member Nations in membership of World Bowls, which is the recognised International Federation for the Sport of Bowls. The objects of World Bowls are:

To create a single, uniform entity through and by which Bowls may be conducted, promoted and administered

To provide for the encouragement, conduct, promotion, advancement, control and administration of Bowls throughout the world

To foster and preserve Bowls

To encourage the growth of the sport on a world wide basis

To act as final arbiter on all matters pertaining to the conduct of Bowls

To establish and conduct educational programmes

To formulate and implement appropriate policies, including policies in relation to equal opportunity, gender and racial equality, drugs in sport, health and safety, and such other matters as arise from time to time as issues to be addressed in Bowls

To conduct or commission research and development for improvements in Bowls and Bowls equipment, including regulations for the testing of bowls (World Bowls licence all Bowls Manufacturers and Testers around the world and are required to monitor compliance with a stringent set of Regulations relating to the Table Testing of Bowls)

To promote the importance of Bowls laws, standards, techniques, awards and education to bodies involved in or related to bowls (World Bowls administers the 'World Bowls Endorsement Scheme for Artificial Bowling Surfaces' requiring regular contact with the manufacturers of such surfaces and the accredited laboratories who undertake extensive tests on such surfaces)

To promulgate and secure uniformity in such laws and standards as may be necessary for the management and control of Bowls, Bowls competitions and related activities including (but not limited to) the Laws of the Sport and coaching standards

To strive for and maintain government, commercial and public recognition of World Bowls as the authority for Bowls

To affiliate and liaise with such bodies as may be desirable in pursuit of the World Bowls objectives or otherwise, including the International Olympic Committee and the Commonwealth Games Federation (World Bowls has recently been accepted as a member of the Confederation Mondiale des Sports de Boules (C.M.S.B.) a World umbrella body incorporating the sports of Bocce, Petanque and Raffa. C.M.S.B. is already affiliated to the International Olympic Committee thus moving forward the objective for Bowls to become an Olympic Sport)

To approve international visits

To authorise the holding of and lay down conditions for International games of a competitive nature (It should be stressed here that only World Bowls affiliated Member National Authorities are eligible to participate in International events and all participants in International events must be an affiliated member of their National Authority, if a National Authority was not an affiliated member of World Bowls none of their bowlers would be eligible to participate in any International Bowls events against competitors from National Authorities affiliated to World Bowls. Furthermore no member would be eligible to participate in any Commonwealth Games or World Championship Bowls event)

World Bowls also wishes to point out that in 2003 they launched a very successful and well received World Champion of Champions Singles event. This event is to be held annually and is open to the then current National Singles Champions of each of its Member National Authorities. In effect this means that all grassroots competitive bowlers entering their National Singles now have the opportunity to become a World Champion, with eligibility being through achievement not selection. World Bowls is fully aware of the decline in entries in the National Championships in recent years and this World Bowls initiative should be seized by all National Authorities and all County/State Associations and Clubs as a marketing tool to promote entries in the future. Bowls has been declared as a core sport for the next three Commonwealth Games and World Bowls is responsible for receiving and administering Bids to host the four yearly Men's and Women's World Championships.
